WHAT THE PROCEDURE INVOLVES
Purpose of breast augmentation
The primary goal of breast augmentation is to enlarge the size of the breasts using implants. However, for optimal results, our surgeons often combine this surgical procedure with other techniques such as breast lifts (also known as mastopexy) or correcting existing asymmetry. Regardless, all aspects and details of the operation will always be agreed upon between the patient and the surgeon to ensure the most satisfactory results.
At IM CLINIC, we tailor our approach to your case, providing solutions to restore your confidence and help you feel good about yourself. We always aim for the best results so you can enjoy natural, beautiful, and firm breasts.
Who is the perfect candidate for breast augmentation?
There are many ways to enhance your breasts or achieve the look you’ve always wanted. Specifically, breast augmentation is designed for:
- Women with a bust size that is small in proportion to their body.
- Women with one breast significantly smaller than the other.
- Women who have lost volume or firmness due to aging, significant weight loss, or pregnancy.
If none of these situations apply to you, but you still feel insecure about your breasts, don’t worry. There are other alternatives that may be right for you, such as surgery for tuberous breasts, a breast lift, or lipofilling.
We invite you to schedule your first consultation with our doctor at our Madrid or Barcelona clinics, who will guide and help you choose the best option for your needs.
Breast augmentation scars
Our surgeons strategically place scars to make them as small and inconspicuous as possible, hiding them in natural folds, the armpit, or around the areola for nearly invisible results over time.
POSTOPERATIVE CARE: AFTER BREAST AUGMENTATION
Maintain a balanced diet rich in protein, vitamins, and minerals to support healing. Stay well-hydrated to aid tissue recovery and overall well-being.
Bed rest is required for the first 48 hours following surgery. Keep your upper body elevated while sleeping to reduce swelling. Avoid any sudden arm movements or lifting your arms above shoulder level for the first 7–10 days. Refrain from carrying heavy objects during this period.
You may shower normally 24–48 hours after surgery. Have someone assist you the first few times to ensure safety. Gently pat your incisions dry with a clean towel or use the cool air setting on a hair dryer to ensure they are completely dry.
Wear a postoperative bra continuously for at least one month to provide proper support, stabilize implants (if applicable), and minimize swelling.
Avoid smoking entirely during your recovery. Smoking can impair wound healing and increase the risk of complications.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT BREAST AUGMENTATION SURGERY
What is the recovery process like after breast augmentation?
You should follow the recommended cleaning and hygiene instructions to avoid damaging the area during the healing process. In the first few days post-surgery, avoid sudden movements or lifting significant weights. Driving is also not recommended until 10 to 15 days have passed.
You should sleep on your back for at least the first month after your mammoplasty. However, this will depend on each patient’s recovery, so your surgeon will provide the most relevant instructions for your case.
How long do I need to wear the postoperative bra?
After the surgery, you’ll leave with a postoperative bra and a chest band to protect the chest, reduce swelling, and ensure proper implant placement. It is essential to wear both the bra and band 24 hours a day for the first four weeks following the augmentation surgery. These can only be removed for showering.
How long does it take for operated breasts to look natural?
Freshly operated breasts tend to look higher and larger than their final appearance after swelling subsides. Swelling of the breast tissue after this type of surgery may last from three to eight weeks, depending on the individual.
Once the drains are removed, recovery speeds up significantly. Around 10 days after breast augmentation surgery, you’ll start to notice the swelling decrease. After one month, when the band and bra are removed, the results of the surgery will begin to show. However, it won’t be until six months later that the breasts will be fully recovered.
Do implants need to be replaced over time?
This depends on the specific case. Today, breast implants are designed to last a lifetime. However, like all materials, they may wear out over time. In such cases, the implants would need to be replaced, but there’s no specific timeframe for doing so.
Remember to schedule annual check-ups to monitor your implants and maintain excellent results.
At what age can breast surgery be performed in Spain?
In Spain, breast augmentation surgery can be performed starting at 18 years old when an individual is considered capable of making autonomous decisions about their body. In exceptional cases and with medical recommendation, the procedure could be performed before 18 years of age with parental or legal guardian consent.
Is nipple sensitivity lost after breast surgery?
Loss of nipple sensitivity can be a side effect after breast augmentation surgery, although it is uncommon. This sensitivity loss is usually temporary due to inflammation or nerve irritation. In most cases, sensitivity returns over time, within the following months. In very rare and exceptional cases, permanent sensitivity loss could occur if the surgery involved manipulation near the nerves.
How can I avoid capsular contracture after breast augmentation?
To prevent capsular contracture, it’s important to follow your surgeon’s postoperative instructions, maintain good hygiene, perform massages if recommended, and attend regular check-ups.
Can you breastfeed with implants?
Yes, in most cases, breastfeeding is possible after breast augmentation, especially if the implants were placed via the submammary (below the breast crease) or submuscular approach, as these techniques tend to interfere less with mammary glands and milk ducts. However, remember that breastfeeding also depends on other factors like overall health and milk production. If you plan to breastfeed in the future and are concerned, discuss it with your surgeon to put your mind at ease.
When can I resume physical exercise after breast augmentation?
It’s essential to let your body fully recover before resuming any physical activity. Doctors generally recommend waiting 4 to 6 weeks before engaging in intense exercise or sports. Recovery time can vary, so listen to your body and start with light activities like walking. Always consult with your doctor or surgeon first.
