ABDOMINOPLASTY SURGERY STEP BY STEP:
Who can have an abdominoplasty?
The abdominoplasty, which is also used to stretch the muscles of the abdominal wall, is especially recommended for men and women with excess skin and accumulated fat in this area that does not respond to a low-calorie diet or physical exercise.
Women with distended abdomen muscles after multiple pregnancies are also, without a doubt, very good candidates for an abdominoplasty.
Those planning to lose a lot of weight and women wishing to get pregnant again should think twice. It is better to postpone the operation in these cases.
What does abdominoplasty surgery involve?
The abdominoplasty technique consists of removing all excess skin between the navel and the pubis. It also allows for any distended muscles to be tightened to give a flat stomach. Combining the abdominoplasty with a liposculpture of the torso gives a much more svelte, feminine and youthful appearance to your entire figure.
What does the HD abdominoplasty involve?
The High Definition concept is combined with the abdominoplasty or dermolipectomy technique. This consists of combining the abdominoplasty with HD High Definition liposculpture to give a more defined, proportionate body shape not only based on the abdomen but also on the torso and thighs.
The HD abdominoplasty technique is exclusively designed for each patient, in line with his or her constitution and proportions.
Duration, anaesthesia and hospitalisation in abdominoplasty
This surgery requires epidural or general anaesthesia or, in very specific cases when a partial abdominoplasty is performed, local anaesthesia. The surgery takes between 2 and 5 hours and request one overnight stay in hospital (this time is reduced considerably -from 1 to 2 hours – in the case of partial surgery, which can be performed in outpatients).
The results of abdominoplasty
Although the results of abdomen surgery are lasting, the patient should follow a balanced diet and take regular physical exercise.
The scarring from abdominoplasty, which is strategically located in the pubis area and can be hidden by panties or a G-string, are invisible after the first year.
Recommendations after abdominoplasty surgery
Patients should walk a lot to ensure fast recovery. Stitches are removed around 10 to 15 days after surgery, which is when the patient can go back to work. Your plastic surgeon will indicate when to start postoperative therapy treatment for faster recovery.
A compression girdle will be required for one month, after which time you can resume any sporting activity.
POSTOPERATIVE CARE: AFTER ABDOMINOPLASTY SURGERY
You can shower normally. But avoid very hot water. During the first few days, be particularly careful when removing your girdle and make sure there is someone nearby when you shower.
You must take relative rest and ensure your legs are raised when lying down. You can take short walks, but should avoid strenuous activities.
You can return to a normal diet after the abdominoplasty. However, try to eat smaller meals more often for the first few days until your rhythm of digestion has returned to normal.
After the shower, dry your scars fully with the cold air (never hot) of a hair dryer.
If you smoke, you should try to stop before your breast augmentation surgery. This will improve your health and your healing capacity.
POST-ABDOMINOPLASTY FAQs
Where will the abdominoplasty scar be located?
When performing the abdominoplasty, the surgeon makes a horizontal incision above the public hair (like a caesarian). This might run to the hip, depending on the amount of skin and fat to be removed.
The scars are hidden behind the prepubic line, where they will become almost invisible after around one year with the appropriate care.
Will I have to wear some kind of bandage or girdle?
Yes. You will be wearing a special compression girdle after surgery for at least one month.
Will there be bruising or swelling?
There will most likely be some bruising during the first few days after surgery. Follow your doctor’s advice.
Can I have an abdominoplasty if I want to get pregnant?
It is not advisable. You should wait until you have recovered from pregnancy because the abdominoplasty tightens the vertical muscles of the abdomen and these might relax during pregnancy.
Is a dermolipectomy recommended if I am overweight or obese?
No, you should first lose weight before having any excess skin removed. The abdominoplasty is not a weight-loss technique.
When can I do abdominal exercises again?
Depending on your progress, your plastic surgeon will advise you on how to return to everyday life and work. Although you will be able to resume physical exercise after a few weeks, you should wait for one month before gradually starting abdominal exercises again.
