WHAT DO YOU NEED?

Who is a good candidate for submental liposuction?

Submental liposuction is for any one, both men and women, who have accumulated fat in the mid and front part of the neck (below the jaw), who have good skin quality and who desire a thin neck and a marked facial shape.

However, this treatment is not recommended for people with excess skin or flaccidity under the chin. In cases where sagging skin must be removed, a lower third lift will be required.

In the event of the two circumstances: excess fatty deposits on the neck and the chin, and excess flaccidity (sagging skin), a combined submental liposuction and neck lift technique may be performed for optimum results.

When there is a clear accumulation of fat in the neck and chin area and slight flaccidity – although not enough to require a lift – submental laser-assisted liposuction is performed with excellent results.

What does submental liposuction surgery involve?

This is a relatively short surgery that uses very thin cannula (2-3mm) to suction the excess subcutaneous fat from under the chin. The incisions are made at strategic points to ensure the scars are hidden and are invisible.

Duration, anaesthesia and hospitalisation in submental liposuction

Submental liposuction is primarily performed under local anaesthesia with sedation, and it is normally an outpatient surgery if not combined with another submental surgery. This means that the patient does not normally have to stay overnight in hospital and can return home on the same day as the surgery.

Results of submental liposuction

Submental liposuction is a procedure that offers very good results. It gives shape to the neck area and under the chin, marks the chin line, rejuvenates the entire face, improves facial harmony, and gives a brighter, more youthful and vital appearance. These results will be permanent if the patient has a healthy lifestyle, a suitable diet, and physical exercise.

The stitches will be removed during the first week. The results are visible after the second week, although a little longer is required before you will see the definitive results. There will be a certain amount of swelling during the first month, which will gradually disappear. After 4 to 6 weeks, the skin will have adapted and fully retracted, showing the definitive results.

Postoperative recommendations for submental liposuction

Everyone undergoing any kind of surgery normally tires easily afterwards. We therefore recommend you request the help of a friend or relative during the first few days.

You should wear a specific compression garment for the neck for the first few weeks.

The neck might feel strange and numb initially due to the swelling. There might be a certain amount of bruising for a couple of weeks. The situation will notably improve as of week three.

The surgeon might recommend postoperative therapy treatment combined with lymphatic drainage to speed up recovery and optimise results.

POSTOPERATIVE CARE: AFTER THE SUBMENTAL LIPOSUCTION

You can shower 24 hours after surgery. You must keep the incisions dry, so apply cold air from a hair dryer after showering.

Sleep with your head slightly raised and follow your surgeon’s advice.

Relative rest is recommended for the first 24-48 h. Avoid lifting heavy weights and lowering your head in front of your body when bending down.

You will have to wear a face band for the first month to achieve optimum results.

If you smoke, you should try to give up before surgery. Smoking might have a negative effect on your recovery and healing.

Will I feel any discomfort after the submental liposuction?

You might notice some tautness and somewhat numb in the area for the first few days.

When will I first be able to see the first changes in my neck?

You will immediately be able to see how your neck has changed shape but you will have to wait 4 to 6 weeks before seeing the definitive results.

When can I start sports again?

You can resume physical exercise after one week. Consult with your surgeon before playing any kind of contact sport or more physical activity.

Is bruising normal after the submental liposuction?

Yes, this is completely normal procedure. Your surgeon will tell you how to minimise this.

Will I have to wear some kind of bandage after submental liposuction?

You should wear a specific face band for at least 20 days. Your surgeon will advise you on how long you should wear it.
